THERAPIES

General therapies

They are directed to the prevention of problems and/or adjuvants of specific treatments.

They include regular water intake, healthy eating habits, absence of smoking habits, moderate alcohol habits, effective oral hygiene (of teeth, gums, tongue and any prostheses or appliances) and control of possible parafunctions such as bruxism.

Medical therapies

They’re drug-based. The most common medicines used are analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs (steroids and/or non-steroids) and antimicrobials, local ly and/or systemic institution.

In specific cases of temporo-mandibular dysfunction and orofacial pain and diseases of the salivary glands, botulinum toxin is also used.

Surgical therapies

Using specific techniques, most interventions are conservative and, thus, performed only under local anesthesia, under outpatient basis.

Biopsy or excision of mucous and bone lesions, correction of gingival and maxillary defects (with or without grafts) or removal of salivary stones are examples. In salivary glands, endoscopy is critical.

Dental therapies

Destartarization, restorations, devitalizations, extractions, prosthetic rehabilitation (with removable prostheses – acrylic or skeletal – or fixed – in teeth or implants) and orthodontic treatments, among others, can be considered.

The latter may be sufficient to correct occlusion or have to associate with jaw surgery.
